The Eugene Ballet Company will lead the performance with the help of over 50 local dancers. This year, we’re lucky to have the classic tale performed locally at the Wood River Performing Arts Center on the Community Campus, this Sunday night, December 8 th at 6:30pm. It’s little wonder why the Nutcracker Ballet has been a popular holiday tradition around the world for more than a century. All set to the timeless and enchanting music of Tchaikovsky. A young heroine and her prince pass through the Land of Snow on their way to see the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Land of Sweets.

Now in our 38th year, we bring programs to children ages’ 4-high school throughout the year with summer workshops, guest teachers and collaboration throughout the valley with our amazing arts community. Our production premiered here in the valley in 2007 based on the Ashton version. Ben Stevenson’s production, 1970, for the Houston Ballet is the most popular in the United States. Since 1945 when Prokofiev finished the score, there have been several choreographers staging Cinderella, most notably Fredrick Ashton of the Royal Ballet, London the first to stage the ballet in the West. 15, 1945 that the ballet we see today gained recognition.

Cinderella in 3 acts was first performed at the Maryinsky Theater, Russia in 1893 but it wasn’t until the music of Sergei Prokofiev was composed Nov. In 1870, the Bolshoi Theater requested Tchaikovsky write the music for the ballet, but it never came to be. A classic fairy tale story by Charles Perrault that many young children dream about, Cinderella the ballet is the least seen of the classic tales. There are 200 talented young dancers who graced the stage for this production. The Dancing Master will be played by Malia Foley, senior at WRHS and Prince by Leo Star, sophomore. Footlight Dance Centre, under the Artistic Direction of Hilarie Neely features Lena Gardner, a senior at WRHS, as Cinderella, the two stepsisters by Adri Meyer and Keyle Potts, Dakota Barth will play the Fairy Godmother, all are seniors, and other Company dancers, Hazel Ludwig, Ava Knowles, Bridgette Silva, Piper Kolb, Audrey Hernandez and Lilia Page, will dance principal roles of the fairies of Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Sparkle.
